Damien Matthews | Matthews Auction Rooms < VICTORIAN DILDO >

A peculiar dildo of a generous size made during the Puritan Victorian era and made of ivory for a wealthy woman was auctioned in Ireland.

Damien Matthews of auction house Matthews Auction Rooms says that the 'dildo' belonged to a wealthy Anglo-Irish family. One of the descendants found it in a drawer and decided to auction it. The ivory dates back to 1840.
One of the members of the proprietary family hunted the elephant in India from whose tusk came ivory. Later, this adventurer had it carved in China into its peculiar form as 'a very loving gift to his wife'.
The piece has a heart carved at the base, where the woman is supposed to place her finger, and a compartment to keep a lock of hair from her husband. The box, which is included in the batch, is made of leather and made in Ireland, as is the lock.
According to Damien Matthews it is a rarity. "I've been in this business for 25 years and I've never seen anything like it," says Matthews. "It should be noted that in Victorian times, the number of people who could afford to have or create something like that was very small. 99% of the country was struggling to survive, and there were only 400 or 500 families with those means Not only is it an erotic toy, it is a work of art and a fascinating piece of social history. "
The auction house estimated its price between 500 and 800 euros, although the interest that it aroused far exceeded that amount.
